Zambia is grappling with a significant power crisis caused by critically low water levels at its hydroelectric power stations. The government, however, is implementing a multi-pronged approach to address the issue and provide relief to citizens.
Addressing the Immediate Gap
The most pressing concern is the lack of sufficient electricity generation. To bridge this gap, the government will be importing diesel-powered generators. This will supplement existing power and hopefully reduce the need for load shedding, the scheduled power outages currently disrupting daily life for many Zambians.
Building Long-Term Solutions
Recognizing the limitations of relying solely on imported resources, the government is also taking steps to ensure a more sustainable energy future. The expansion of Maamba Collieries, a major source of coal for thermal power plants, will increase Zambia's domestic energy production and lessen dependence on global energy markets.

While the imported generators offer some immediate relief, the government is committed to finding a long-term solution. A review of the current load shedding schedule is planned for October, with the aim of reducing power cut hours. Additionally, Water and Sanitation Minister Mike Mposha emphasized the importance of water conservation. He urged entities like farmers to adopt water-saving practices, such as drip irrigation, to maximize available water resources for hydropower generation.
By implementing this multifaceted approach, Zambia is working towards a future with a more secure and sustainable energy supply. The combination of immediate solutions like generators with long-term investments in domestic energy production and water conservation offers a path towards overcoming the current crisis and building a more resilient power grid.
